Why this matters now

AI is becoming how people find answers

As AI assistants and large language models answer more questions directly, classic search engine optimization no longer guarantees you are seen. The shift behind the score, each number linked to its source:

800M+

More than 800 million people use ChatGPT every week as of October 2025.

TechCrunch

-58%

AI Overviews are linked to a roughly 58% lower click-through rate for the #1 organic result (Ahrefs, 2026; a correlation, not proven cause).

Ahrefs

+693%

U.S. retail traffic from generative-AI sources grew roughly 693% year over year over the 2025 holiday season.

Adobe Analytics

+31%

By the 2025 holiday season, AI-referred shoppers converted roughly 31% higher than other traffic sources.

Adobe Analytics

The honest picture: AI referrals are still only about 1% of all website traffic as of 2025, and only about 1 in 3 Americans (31%) say they trust AI to give reliable information (YouGov, 2025). The shift is real and early, not finished. That is the case for getting citation-ready now, while it is still cheap to do.

A score you can defend

Nine checks. The structural ones (schema, crawlability, freshness) are verified in code, and a few are graded by an AI judge at a fixed, no-randomness setting. The same page gets the same score.

Page-type aware

A homepage is not graded like a blog post. We detect the page type and judge it by the right standard, so the number is fair and the fixes actually fit your page.

Tells you exactly what to fix

Every issue is explained in plain language and ranked by impact versus effort, plus a ready-to-paste schema block. You always know what to do first.

How the score works, in brief

Aeody gives any page a 0 to 100 AEO Score across nine dimensions, blending deterministic checks with an AI judge set to temperature 0, then ranks the fixes by impact. It covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI, and Claude.

Case study

We use it on our own sites

We don't just sell the score, we run it. We put one of our own content sites through Aeody, made the top fixes it flagged in a single pass, and the score went from 64 to 83. In the weeks after, referral visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini climbed in our analytics.

AEO Scores are estimates of citation-readiness, not guarantees that any AI engine will cite a page, and your results depend on your own content.

Frequently asked questions

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), and how is it different from SEO?

SEO competes to rank as a clickable link in a list of search results. AEO competes for something different: being quoted and cited inside the answer an AI engine writes, like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, or Claude. They overlap on the basics (both reward a page that is easy to crawl and genuinely useful), but AEO adds the job of making your content easy for an AI to lift a clear, self-contained answer from and attribute to you.

How is the AEO Score calculated, and how accurate is it?

Your 0-to-100 score comes from nine dimensions covering structure, schema, sourcing, freshness, crawlability, and entity clarity. Most are deterministic checks that run in code, so the same page always gets the same structural result; a few judgment-based dimensions are graded by an AI model set to its most consistent, no-randomness setting (temperature 0). It is an estimate of how citation-ready your page is, not a guarantee any single engine will quote you. Our methodology page lists every dimension and how each one is checked.

Which AI engines does the score cover?

It reflects citation-readiness for the major answer engines: ChatGPT and ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, and Claude. We probe and measure how ready your page is for these engines. We never claim to see the real prompts people type into them, because nobody outside the engines can.

Is the free score really free, and do I need an account?

Yes, and no account is needed. Paste a URL and your 0-to-100 score plus the full nine-dimension breakdown are free with no login. Entering an email, still free, unlocks two extras: a prioritized fix list ranked by impact versus effort, and a ready-to-paste JSON-LD schema block tailored to your page. Separately, we are building a paid AI Visibility Tracker for ongoing monitoring, but you never have to buy anything to use the scorer.

Do I need to be technical, and what do I do with my results?

You do not need to be a developer. You paste a URL and get a plain-language score in under a minute, with nothing to install. Each issue is explained in everyday terms and ranked from easiest to hardest, so you can fix simple things yourself in your site builder and hand the rest to whoever maintains your site. The schema block we generate is copy-and-paste, not coding: drop it in and re-score the page to watch your number move.

Will my homepage get a low score for not having an author or publish date?

No. The score is page-type aware. A blog article genuinely needs a named author and a publish date, so it is checked for those, but a homepage or product page is not. Each page is judged by the standard that fits it, such as clear entity details and Product schema rather than a byline it was never meant to have.

Is my URL and email data safe? Will you sell my information?

You can run a score with no account at all. We log the URL you analyze and its score so we can calibrate and improve our rubric, and we use privacy-respecting page-view analytics to understand how the tool is used, but we never sell or share your data. If you enter an email to unlock the fix list, we use it only to send your results and occasional product updates, and you can opt out anytime. We only read what is already public on your page; we never change or post anything to your site.

If I already rank well on Google, do I really need this?

Probably, yes. A strong Google ranking does not mean an AI engine will quote you. In a 2025 Ahrefs study of about 15,000 queries, only around 12% of the URLs that assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini cited also ranked in Google's top 10 for the same query, so the two surfaces overlap far less than people assume. And in a 2025 Ahrefs analysis of 75,000 brands, unlinked brand mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.66, well above the 0.22 for backlinks. AI visibility is its own channel, and it has to be measured on its own.

Does adding schema markup guarantee I will get cited?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. In a 2026 controlled before-and-after test of 1,885 pages, Ahrefs found that adding schema markup produced no meaningful lift in AI citations. Schema still helps engines parse and trust your page, so we measure it, but that is exactly why our fix list ranks clear answer structure and specific, verifiable facts above markup. We weight what actually moves the number, and we tell you when a popular tactic does not.

Is AI search actually big enough to matter yet?

It is growing fast but still small in absolute terms, and we will not oversell it. More than 800 million people now use ChatGPT every week (October 2025), and Google's AI Overviews reach roughly 2 billion monthly users, yet AI referrals are still only about 1% of all website traffic as of 2025. The shift is real and early: U.S. retail traffic from generative-AI sources grew roughly 693% year over year over the 2025 holiday season, and those visitors converted about 31% higher than other traffic (Adobe Analytics). Getting citation-ready now is a low-cost bet on a fast-rising channel.

How long until I see results, and can you guarantee AI engines will cite me?

The scan itself takes under a minute, but improving real AI visibility usually takes a few weeks, because engines have to re-crawl your updated pages and rebuild their answers. No tool can guarantee a citation, and anyone who promises that is overselling, since no one controls what an AI chooses to quote. What the score does is measure how citation-ready your page is and raise your odds: fix the high-impact items, then re-scan after each round of changes.
